1840 an example of the 1d Mulready lettersheet addressed to Reading being cancelled by a superb strike of the distinctive fluid purple-brown Maltese cross of Salisbury and bearing on front a datestamp in red ink for MY 22 1840. A rare and most attractive item. This unusual mixture of cancelling ink only lasted for the month of May at Salisbury, which was the first month of use of the Maltese cross.
