1840 a 1d black issue from plate 4 lettered E.I. on a hand-illustrated wrapper addressed to Chelmsford from London being tied by a red Maltese cross and dated on reverse for 28 SE 1840.The letter is from a correspondence from George Cowell, manager of the Albion Brewery in Stoke Newington to his brother Josiah, who occupied the same position at the Well & Perry Brewery in Chelmsford. This rare illustrated letter in pen and ink contains a hilarious treatise concerning zoological opinions on “The inside of a Fly” and bears some very fine illustrations, which graphically open a window on Mid Victorian London.
