1840 a wrapper addressed to Edinburgh from Lerwick dated on reverse for No 10 1840 being rated at "1" on front, and bearing the "step type" "Lerwick / Ship Letter" handstamp in black ink together with a "Leith / Ship Letter" handstamp in the same design in red ink and bearing an Edinburgh arrival mark for DEC 3 1840. This wrapper illustrated the customary use of the Ship Letter system over the conveyance of mails by road during the winter months from the Northern Isles. A rare and most attractive cover. Bov#72
